Polestar shows prototype of the Polestar 3

Polestar has given a preview of its Polestar 3 electric SUV planned for next year with a new teaser image. Polestar has given a preview of its Polestar 3 electric SUV planned for next year with a new teaser image. There are also new figures on the growth targets of the Swedish-Chinese electric brand.

First, to the Polestar 3; The model is not only the electric car brand’s first SUV, but also the first Polestar vehicle to be built in the US – more specifically, at Volvo’s Ridgeville plant in South Carolina.

The production version is to be unveiled next year, but based on the teaser image showing a vehicle in pixel camouflage film, some details can already be discerned. The front headlights appear to extend a little further up into the bonnet, and the front grille is also significantly flatter in the typical Polestar shape. As on the Polestar 2, the exterior mirrors appear to be relatively small for aerodynamic reasons, and they are also mounted on the door sill.

From diagonally in front of the vehicle, the roofline sloping down towards the rear can also be clearly seen. Polestar had already announced that the Polestar 3 will not have a third row of seats, so it will be offered as a five-seater at most. Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath expects the decision to differentiate the car from the Volvo XC90, which will also be built in Ridgeville in the future, but also to create an aerodynamic roofline, which should emphasise “the space between the first and second row”.

“We will build in America for Americans,” Ingenlath now says, according to the latest announcement. “Polestar 3 is planned to be launched in 2022 as a premium electric performance SUV that will define the look of SUVs in the electric age.”

Since Polestar does not give any performance details in the announcement, all that remains are the statements from September: the Polestar 3 is to get powertrains with one or two electric motors. As a distinction to the platform brother XC90, there will also be a particularly powerful version. So far, the range is said to be 600 kilometres+, and the Polestar 3 will be priced at the same level as a Porsche Cayenne.

At an event in the USA for the press and investors, Ingenlath also announced that the Polestar 3 will have lidar sensors from the US company Luminar, while the central computer will come from chip specialist Nvidia. In combination, both systems are supposed to enable autonomous driving on the motorway.

With its two existing models on the road in 14 markets around the world, Polestar aims to achieve sales of 29,000 vehicles this year. By expanding into new markets, launching three new vehicles and further expanding existing markets, Polestar plans to increase global sales tenfold from around 29,000 vehicles in 2021 to 290,000 vehicles in 2025.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The brand new Walmart Import Distribution Center will open soon in Ridgeville and you can learn more about employment opportunities at the massive facility on Working Wednesdays.

The center is bringing more than 1000 local jobs to the area.

“We’re probably gonna be more so looking into 1300-1500 jobs that we’ll be hiring to be able to support this facility and all the volume we’ll be pushing out of it, General Manager Jeff Holzbauer said.

Imported goods will arrive through the South Carolina port, and will be stored and sorted at the Walmart Import Distribution Center for delivery to approximately 850 Walmart and Sam’s Clubs throughout South Carolina and other states in the southeast.

“So we will actually start receiving product Feb. 1 of next year, and start shipping product out April 5,” Holzbauer said.

The main focus now is filling positions for freight handlers. The job pays $18 - $19.35 per hour, depending on the shift. Click here to apply.

“The week of Oct. 11 we will start going after a large number of associates to be able to help us with that receiving of the product.”

Other positions include hourly leads, maintenance technicians, order fillers, unloader/processors, and environmental health and safety associates.

The 3-million-square-foot facility is the equivalent of 52 football fields. Dorchester County Economic Development officials say construction should wrap up by the end of the year. The first shipment of goods should arrive at the center by early February, and distribution is expected to start by early April.

Polestar isn’t sharing how many of its compact electric cars it has sold since launch a year ago, other than to say the numbers in North America are on track, and globally they’re in the tens of thousands.

Reading between the lines, most sales have probably been in Europe and China, with Polestar a joint venture between Sweden’s Volvo and its Chinese parent, Geely.

There are three reasons to believe we’ll soon see more Polestars on Canadian roads. First is that the Polestar 2 launched last year but only with a loaded two-motor trim priced at $70,000. Now there’s a single-motor base model starting at $49,900 and the dual-motor starts at $56,900.

Second, coming next year is Polestar 3, a crossover that will compete where most of the entry-luxury-market action is these days. Third, the Polestar 3 will be built alongside Volvos in Ridgeville, S.C., which should mollify buyers who prefer to buy “domestic.”

As for the Polestar 2, it’s still coming out of China, and the company line is “We have not announced any manufacturing changes for Polestar 2 as of this time.”

Geopolitics aside, let’s recap on the car itself. The 2 competes in the compact luxury sedan segment, though it’s actually a hatchback (nothing wrong with that, and we can call it a five-door fastback if you prefer). It’s about 15 cm shorter and 4 cm taller than the norm in that class. The new Long Range Single Motor (SM) base car has a 170-kW (231 hp) motor in the nose driving the front wheels, versus the Dual Motor’s (DM) 150-kW motor at each end.

Maximum torque is halved, from 483 to 243 lb.-ft, but while the output differences are substantial, the SM has “quicker” gearing, 120 kg less mass to propel, and more balanced weight distribution, to mitigate the loss of fun-to-driveness.

The lighter, slower model also has a range advantage, officially 435 km versus 400 km. The DM’s rating is an increase on last year’s, thanks to reprogrammed software that can also be over-the-air (OTA) updated on 2021 models. Additional range of up to 10 per cent could also be available, Polestar says, if you opt for the $5,500 option package that includes a heat-pump HVAC system.

Battery capacity remains at 78 kW (of which 75 kW is usable) though the “Long Range” part of the car’s names implies a more affordable smaller-battery alternative. A Standard Range model does exist, but Polestar says it’s not coming to Canada.

Beyond the $49,900 for the SM, the dual-motor starts at $56,900. By luxury-car standards the options menu is quite simple. A $5,500 Plus Pack on either model includes the aforementioned heat pump plus a glass panoramic sunroof, Harmon Kardon audio, wireless phone charger, heated steering wheel and heated rear seats.

A Performance Pack ($6,000), available only on the DM, comprises handling and braking upgrades, though an upsize to 20-inch wheels is available on either model for $1,200.

Like the DM we tested last year, the SM Polestar 2 combines practicality, comfort and safety with a driving experience that, if less exhilarating, is still engaging. Its range is competitive, and so is the price.

Shorter in length than most rivals but also a tad taller, the Polestar 2 has a stubby, chunky look that belies its svelte 0.28 drag coefficient. It doesn’t look like a “hatchback,” either, but effectively that’s what it is.

Apart from the large portrait-oriented centre touch-screen, the cockpit looks relatively conventional at first glance. Forward visibility is great, the “shift lever” is where you’d expect, and the driving position sportily low-slung. Once installed, you’ll notice there’s no stop/start button – the car powers up when it senses a body in the driver’s seat – and precious few buttons of any other kind.

For better or worse, secondary controls rely heavily on the touch-screen. Nor are there any “virtual” dials on the digital gauge cluster. The minimalist display can be configured to show the navigation map, but otherwise it features little more than a digital speedometer, and bar graphs for range and state of charge. Leather is an expensive stand-alone option in a décor that otherwise prioritizes sustainable, eco-friendly materials. As for passengers, the rear cabin is certainly not cramped, but there’s less room than in most of its peers.

The SM’s 7.4-second 0-100-km/h time substantially lags the DM’s 4.7 seconds. You feel it most at launch, the acceleration steady and linear where the DM lunges off the line. The SM still feels pretty punchy once you’re rolling – for example when you need a quick burst of speed to pass a slower car.

While the SM car’s cornering limits don’t equal the Performance-Pack’d DM we tested last year, its engaging handling will still satisfy “expressive” drivers. The ride is still somewhat choppy. As for range, the test sample (which did not have the heat pump) showed 434 km at 100-per-cent state of charge when we picked it up. After 200 km of mixed (and sometimes spirited) driving on a 20-degree day it showed 225 km of range remaining at 54 per cent SoC.

The technology pièce de resistance is Polestar’s Android infotainment system, co-developed with Google and capable of over-the-air updates. Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play are integrated, with no need to plug in your phone (yes, it also works with iPhones).

Most assisted-drive mod cons are standard but you’ll pay $4,500 for the Pilot Package that adds adaptive cruise and Level 2 semi-autonomous drive capability, plus various lighting/visibility upgrades.

A tow rating is rare in any passenger car these days, let alone an EV, but the Polestar 2 can tow up to 900 kg of braked trailer. Flat-and-flush folding seats beneath a lifting tailgate optimize versatility, even if cargo volume is unremarkable: 405 L (including underfloor volume), plus another 35 L in the “frunk.”

Volvo’s Ridgeville plant to go fully electric

CEO Håkan Samuelsson announced the plant’s ambitions in an interview with Automotive News. The plant, which currently only produces the S60 mid-size sedan, will initially be expanded to include two electric crossovers. As already officially announced, production of the Polestar 3 electric SUV for the US market is to start there next year. In addition, there will be the battery-electric version of the Volvo XC 90.

This confirms rumours at the beginning of 2020 that the electric XC 90 could be built at the Ridgeville plant. It is not yet official whether the all-electric successor to the Volvo XC60, which was announced a few days ago as part of Volvo Cars’ battery joint venture with Northvolt, could also be produced at the US plant from the end of 2024. Details are expected to follow in due course.

The plant, located northwest of the US city of Charleston, was commissioned three years ago. According to earlier statements by the car manufacturer, about 700 million dollars were invested in the site to build electric cars there in the future. According to Samuelsson, it will now be the “first factory in the world to build our new generation all-electric cars – ahead of Europe and ahead of China”. “Charleston will play a very important role in our electrification strategy,” Samuelsson elaborates. “It is a huge investment that we are making here.”

The battery-electric vehicles, based on the company’s proprietary SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) kit, are expected to feature advanced autonomous driver assistance technology. “We have developed new technology, including a completely new architecture that is all-electric,” Samuelsson said.

The electric cars built at the Ridgeville plant in the future will be primarily for the US market, but Automotive News reports that the plant has the capacity to supply overseas markets if needed. At least as far as the electric XC90 is concerned, the factory will initially be the global production centre. From there, the XC90 BEV will be “exported first to Europe and possibly China”, as Javier Varela, head of industrial operations at Volvo Cars, explained. The intention is not to “build a super hub to export from here”, Varela said. “It’s about having a facility that can supply this market and then help supply other markets with flexibility.”

However, since its launch in autumn 2018, the plant has only reached a fraction of its annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, according to LMC Automotive. Last year, Volvo built fewer than 26,500 S60 midsize sedans in Ridgeville, according to the report.

Polestar, meanwhile, announced in mid-June that production of the SUV model called Polestar 3 for customers is expected to begin in 2022 at the Ridgeville site in the US. Not much is known about the vehicle yet: The Geely-owned Swedish company does not intend to make full product details public until a later date.

Polestar was founded in 2017 by Volvo Cars and Geely Holding. The fact that Polestar shares a production facility with Volvo Cars underlines the significant industrial and financial synergies resulting from the ownership structure, the Swedish company recently stressed. “Production in the US reduces both delivery times and the environmental impact associated with transporting vehicles around the world. It will even have a positive impact on the price of the Polestar 3,” said Dennis Nobelius, COO at Polestar.

The Polestar 3 represents the debut of a new generation of Volvo Car Group’s electric vehicle architecture, designed from the ground up for full electrification. The model will have autonomous driving capabilities and industry-leading connectivity features based on Google’s Android Automotive OS infotainment system.

Also brand new is the news that Volvo Car Group and Northvolt are to form a 50:50 joint venture to develop and produce sustainable batteries. The duo’s central objective is to build a new battery cell factory in Europe with a potential capacity of up to 50 GWh per year. However, the joint venture wants to start with the implementation of a research and development centre in Sweden, which is to go into operation in 2022.

The aforementioned battery cell factory with up to 50 GWh is scheduled to open in 2026 and employ around 3,000 people. The location has not yet been determined, but it is already clear that the products manufactured there will be specifically tailored to power the next generation of pure electric cars from Volvo and Polestar. According to the partners, the first car with battery cells from the new joint venture will be the electric successor to the Volvo XC60 mentioned above. “With self-developed cells for our electric cars, we can focus on giving Volvo and Polestar customers what they want, like range and short charging times,” said Henrik Green, chief technology officer at Volvo Cars.
